Crossing the International Date Line

By June 15, 2010Personal

The trip to New Zealand begins!

My flight on 4 June 2010 to New Zealand from Los Angeles was my first time to ever cross the international date line. It is somewhat of a weird experience to simply lose an entire day just by flying over a line; however, it does give me the advantage of being one of the first people in the whole world to see the sunrise each day!

International Date Line

Today is the official start of our New Zealand adventure! Knape is on the flight right before ours so she will land in Auckland one hour earlier and wait for us. Noah and I both slept well on the plane and I actually got about 7 hours of sleep (thanks to a new travel pillow that Noah bought me for Christmas as well as some good drugs to knock me out!). It is now early Sunday morning at 5:30AM and I feel well-rested and ready to start the full day ahead (thanks to the incredible vegan food and service on our flight).

Once we land in Auckland we will clear customs and move to the domestic terminal and take another flight from AKL-NPE (Napier), where we will begin our tour of the country! We will experience a wine tour this afternoon followed by some sightseeing and dinner in the city. I’m very much looking forward to experiencing all the wines of Hawke’s Bay and Napier on our wine tour, and I know that Noah is looking forward to experiencing one of the greatest collections of Art Deco architecture in the world. I hope that Knape was able to get some rest on her flight because I am ready to go!

Have you ever been to New Zealand or crossed the International Date Line? Let me know in the comments!

hi im just wondering the the significance of crossing the International Date Line when travelling from: auckland to las angeles?
    and rarotonga to auckland?

    hi jade,
crossing the date line from LA to Auckland was not bad at all. we arrived into auckland with very little jetlag (we stayed awake and did a wine tour upon landing) and were 100% good to go this next morning. we were not as lucky on our return leg however as we struggled with jetlag for a good two weeks after returning to the states.
